Everything you need to know about Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis - Ancient disease, Newer challenges

Until recent times, tuberculosis in a family member was considered a secret to be hidden from everyone. TB was once seen as a reflection of the family's deprivation, poverty, and malnourishment. People dreaded those patients who coughed up blood from dawn to dusk and finally succumbed to the disease. Today, effective medicines which can completely cure the disease in a few months are available in the market. But, even when medical science hopes to eradicate the disease, there are several newer challenges stopping us from achieving it. Drug-resistant bacteria, which do not respond to the existing drugs and other immunodeficiency diseases like HIV, pose a major threat in globally eradicating the disease. India is one among the countries that have the highest number of TB patients. If TB was once the indicator of poverty, it is now rampant even among the social elites, especially in diabetic patients.

We are to discuss TB in three parts.

The first module covers topics like TB as a disease, its history, the disease-causing bacterium and ways of transmission of the disease.

The second module includes information about the different types of TB, symptoms, and diagnosis of the disease.

The last module talks about the different methods of treatment, preventive measures, new medicines and newer challenges in the field of tuberculosis eradication.
