2020-ൽ, ആഗോള തലത്തിൽ 463 ദശലക്ഷം ആളുകൾക്ക് പ്രമേഹം ബാധിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. തെക്കുകിഴക്കൻ ഏഷ്യയിൽ 88 ദശലക്ഷം ആളുകൾ, അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര പ്രമേഹ ഫെഡറേഷൻ (IDF) കണക്കാക്കിയപ്രകാരം പ്രമേഹബാധിതര്‍ ആണ്. മേല്‍പറഞ്ഞ 88 ദശലക്ഷം പേരില്‍ 77 ദശലക്ഷം ആളുകളും ഇന്ത്യയിലാണ്; ചൈന കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ ലോകത്തിലെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ ഏറ്റവും ഗുരുതര മേഖല. 2019ല്‍ 4.2 ദശലക്ഷം പേര്‍ പ്രമേഹരോഗം മൂലമോ അതിന്‍റെ സങ്കീര്‍ണ്ണതകള്‍ മൂലമോ മരണപ്പെട്ടു. പ്രമേഹ രോഗികൾക്ക് ഗുരുതരമായ COVID-19 സങ്കീർണ്ണതകൾ (മരണം ഉൾപ്പെടെ) ഉണ്ടാവാന്‍ സാധ്യതയുണ്ട്. പ്രമേഹമില്ലാത്ത ആളുകളെ അപേക്ഷിച്ച് ഇത് ചുരുങ്ങിയത് രണ്ട് മടങ്ങ് കൂടുതലാണ്.

പ്രമേഹപ്രതിരോധം, ചികിത്സ, ക്ലിനിക്കൽ വൈദഗ്ധ്യം എന്നിവയില്‍ നിലവിലുള്ള പഴുതുകള്‍ അടയ്ക്കുന്നതിനും, ദശലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് ജീവൻ രക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിനുമുള്ള ഒരു രൂപരേഖ ‘ലാന്‍സറ്റ് കമ്മീഷന്‍ ഓൺ ഡയബെറ്റിസ്’ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. നിലവിലുള്ള അടിസ്ഥാന സൗകര്യങ്ങൾ മെച്ചപ്പെടുത്തിക്കൊണ്ട് സമഗ്രചികിത്സ നൽകുന്നതിനും, പ്രമേഹ പരിചരണം പുനഃക്രമീകരിക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള കഴിവും ശേഷിയും ഉള്ള വിദഗ്ദ ഡോക്ടർമാരെ പടുത്തുയര്‍ത്തുന്നതിനും, ഡോക്ടര്‍മാര്‍ അല്ലാത്ത ജീവനക്കാരെ സജ്ജമാക്കുന്നതിനും, സാങ്കേതികവിദ്യയുടെ സഹായത്തോടെ താങ്ങാവുന്ന നിരക്കിലുള്ള തുടര്‍ച്ചയായ പ്രമേഹപരിചരണം ലഭ്യമാക്കുന്നതിനും കമ്മീഷന്‍ വാദിക്കുന്നു. സർവകലാശാലകൾ, റെഗുലേറ്ററി ഏജൻസികൾ, പ്രൊഫഷണൽ അസോസിയേഷനുകൾ എന്നിവയില്‍ സ്പെഷ്യലിസ്റ്റ് സ്റ്റാഫിന് പരിശീലനം നൽകാനും, പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് താഴ്ന്ന, ഇടത്തരം വരുമാനമുള്ള രാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ പ്രമേഹ ഗവേഷണ പദ്ധതികളില്‍ അവരെ പങ്കാളികളാക്കാനും കമ്മീഷന്‍ നിര്‍ദ്ദേശിക്കുന്നു. മെഡിക്കൽ ഉപകരണങ്ങളുടെ ശരിയായ ഉപയോഗം, മരുന്നുകൾ, പ്രമേഹ പ്രതിരോധം, ചികിത്സാ സാങ്കേതികവിദ്യ എന്നിവയില്‍ അവബോധവും വൈദഗ്ധ്യവും മെച്ചപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിന് സാങ്കേതിക വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ പരിപാടികളും ശില്പശാലകളും സംഘടിപ്പിക്കാൻ അവർ നിർദ്ദേശിക്കുന്നു. ലോകാരോഗ്യസംഘടന ഇതിന്‍റെ അടിസ്ഥാനത്തില്‍ ആഗോള പ്രമേഹ നയരേഖ പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. ഇത് ഗവൺമെന്റുകൾ, ആരോഗ്യജീവനക്കാര്‍, രോഗീക്ഷേമപക്ഷവാദികള്‍, സന്നദ്ധ സംഘടനകൾ എന്നിവര്‍ തമ്മിലുള്ള സഹകരണങ്ങൾക്ക് ഒരു ശക്തമായ അവസരമാണ്.
